Maitland Museums of Art and History opens Spring 2020 exhibition, “The Exotic Realms of Jules André Smith”, in time for Valentine’s Day

If you were looking to spend your Valentine’s Day surrounded by mystical works of art, look no further than Maitland’s Art and History Museums.

The A&H opens its spring 2020 exhibition, The Exotic Realms of Jules André SmithFriday, February 14, at the Maitland Art Center Gallery.

The exhibition explores Smith’s art through a range of mediums including watercolour, oil paints, sculpture, stage sets, cast concrete relief, architectural drawing and architectural ornamentation. .

The Exotic Kingdoms delves into Smith’s designs from 1937 to 1942 for the Research Studio, which is now known as the Maitland Art Center. The center has been designated a National Historic Landmark as one of the last remaining examples of Mayan Revival architecture in the southeastern United States.

Christian and pagan gods and figures from various religions and cultures can be found in the relief carvings in the center. Exotic Realms invites customers to step into these fantastical worlds and learn the story of André Smith, the man who created them.

A Garden of Eden-inspired opening reception is scheduled to launch the exhibit at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 13, immersing guests in Smith’s exotic realm with a vibrant tropical setting, cocktails and appetizers. work. Tickets are $10 each (that’s the price of two Starbucks drinks!) and can be purchased at artandhistory.org/eden.
