THEos Angeles, CA (September 27, 2021)—After a year of closure and a summer of welcoming visitors to the museum’s daily experiences, the Exhibition Center’s Natural History Museum (NHM) presents a new roster of stunning exhibits, installations and public programs for the whole family, including the start of the West Coast exhibit Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr Jane Goodall.
Additionally, the museum will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Dinosaur Hall and feature a giant ichthyosaur skull discovered by our scientists in Nevada; reopen the doors of the open-air Spider Pavilion; display the work of master celebrity jewelry designer Robert Procop; and much more! Plus, at La Brea Tar Pits in Hancock Park, check out the Mammoths and mastodons setup and see science in action with new discoveries every day.

Spider Pavilion

This one-of-a-kind seasonal lodge offers a rare glimpse into the secret life of spiders. Visitors can walk around the open-air pavilion to see hundreds of orb weavers and their incredible webs. The Spider Den offers the opportunity to peer into enclosed habitats that are home to different species, from tarantulas to jumping spiders. NHM museum educators will share compelling stories and serve as a resource to answer any questions about arachnids along the way.

Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr Jane Goodall

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) will showcase the West Coast debut of Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr Jane Goodall. The exhibit, curated by National Geographic in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute, will explore Dr Goodall’s venerable career, reviewing the work of the primatologist from her early field research in Gombe, Tanzania, to her current community-centered work. The exhibit features experiential activities and immersive exhibits, including a replica of his research tent and an immersive projection of Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania. Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn about her current role as a leader in community-centered conservation and youth empowerment with the Jane Goodall Institute.

Discovery of the depths

This temporary display contains an extremely rare female Pacific footballfish (Himantolophus sagamius, a type of monkfish), which was discovered in May 2021 at Crystal Cove State Park in Newport Beach, California. Typically found thousands of feet underwater, this fish now resides in the NHMLAC ichthyology collection and is one of 30 female specimens available for study in museum collections around the world. A traditional Japanese gyotaku (fish rub, or print) of the specimen, created by artist Dwight Hwang accompanies the presentation.

Discovering a giant fossil

While dinosaurs ruled the land during the Mesozoic era, marine reptiles like this giant ichthyosaur – nicknamed Jim 2 – ruled the sea. At 17 meters long, this specimen is in fact the largest organism ever found in the Triassic. medium (242 to 244 million years ago). Unearthed from the mountains of Nevada and on display for the very first time, visitors can see the cone-shaped teeth and narrow muzzle of the full two-meter skull of this oceanic predator up close and learn about its journey to the museum. . Tom and Bonda Young, founders of the Great Basin Brewing Co., helped fund the seven years of work it took to unearth Jim 2 and prepare him in NHM’s Dino Lab.

Brilliance: the art and science of rare jewelry

Brilliance: the art and science of rare jewelry presents more than a hundred spectacular objects – necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings and unmounted precious stones – which will be on display alongside minerals from the museum’s collection. The exhibition explores how precious stones and rare minerals are used in a wide variety of fields, from jewelry design to scientific research in geology, chemistry, physics and other disciplines.
Drawn primarily from the works of master jeweler Robert Procop, the show includes striking examples of colorful fancy diamonds, such as the world’s largest green diamond and one of the world’s largest pink diamonds. In addition to learning how precious stones are used to make jewelry, visitors will also find out how scientists use these exceptional stones to learn more about earthly processes and, in turn, to better understand how our planet works.

Rise Up LA: A Century of Votes for Women

This exhibition pays homage to 100 years of passion and progress through the personal stories of the everyday women who shaped the suffrage movement. Through photographs, ephemeral protests (signs, buttons, banners and magazines), video and audio, Get up in Los Angeles shines a light on the lives of women in Los Angeles County who for the past 100 years have fought for women’s rights.
