IWM Wins Prestigious 2022 IBC Innovation Award

Imperial War Museums has won the 2022 IBC Innovation Award in Content Distribution for its collaborative project with Spectra Logic and other technology partners on designing a digital asset management and storage ecosystem with a multi-site implementation. This IWM project allows generations to explore over one million items amassed since 1917 across IWM’s five branches.

BOULDER, Colo., Sept. 12, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Spectra Logic, a global leader in data management and storage solutions, today announced that its client, Imperial War Museums (IWM), has won the award of the 2022 IBC Innovation in “Content Distribution” for a prodigious project in collaboration with Spectra Logic and technology partners on the design of a digital asset management and storage ecosystem with a multisite implementation in centers data in Cambridge and London. Striving for excellence in digital preservation, this IWM project allows generations to explore more than one million items amassed since 1917 across IWM’s five branches. The 2022 IBC Innovation Awards celebrate the spirit of collaboration within the content and technology industry, recognizing the best new ways to manage content and connect creators and consumers, or creators and their collaborators.

Project IWM’s data management and storage architecture brings together software and hardware from multiple vendors, including Spectra Logic, Axiell, and Veritas, to enable IWM to collect and preserve real-life histories of modern warfare, conflict, and of their impact. The result is a genetically diverse and geographically dispersed storage ecosystem that provides IWM with the technology needed to safeguard the collections that fuel its invaluable programs, immersive exhibits, historical filmmaking, research and learning programs.

Ian Crawford, Chief Information Officer at the Imperial War Museums, said: “We have around 1.5 petabytes of unique data, but with multiple copies to protect that data, we are actually storing almost five petabytes. When we embarked on our search for a storage solution capable of preserving the Imperial War Museums’ extensive digital archives, they met all of our requirements, and some of them.

With the challenge of reliably preserving a collection of over one million digital assets, IWM was driven to establish a digital archive that exemplifies best practices in long-term storage and digital preservation. Their storage ecosystem includes Spectra T950 Tape Libraries; BlackPearl Spectrum® NAS with high-density disk capacity allowing for expansion; Spectra’s BlackPearl object storage platform, providing migration capability between tape generations; and Spectra StorCycle® software, allowing data migration from primary storage, saving IWM storage capacity and money.

The final project provides IWM with a digital archive that offers reliability, scalability, effortless data migration, cost effectiveness, and longevity to help them store that data forever.
